First Lady Angelica Van Buren

First Lady Angelica Van Buren

Angelica Van Buren became the President’s First Lady after she married his eldest son Abram, in the fall of 1838. Her first public appearance was at the New Year’s reception in 1839. Following a trip to Europe, where she and Abram were entertained by royalty Angelica sought to introduce some of the European formality in entertainment at the White House. For this she was much criticized by many who felt that such aristocratic innovations were not appropriate to our democratic form of government.
