First Lady Sarah Polk

First Lady Sarah Polk

Sarah Polk attended the Moravian Seminary at Salem, N.C., as a youngster, and was the first First lady to be so well educated. With a greater understanding of political issues than most of those who preceded her, she soon became more than the official White House hostess and was her husband’s most trusted and valued adviser. As a result of her religious upbringing she served no refreshments at receptions, nor did she permit dancing at White House functions. Despite this, she was a most gracious hostess.
