First Lady Mary McElroy

First Lady Mary McElroy

Again a Vice President was called upon to be President after an assassination. When President Garfield died, Chester Alan Arthur took the oath of office and moved into the White House. His wife’s tragic death in 1880 had left him a widower and he asked his sister, Mary McElroy, to act as First Lady. Chester Arthur had always entertained on a lavish scale in his private life, and naturally, now during his term of office, his hospitality was prodigious. Mary McElroy was always at his side, planning and assisting; they both were very popular in Washington. It is said that the White House was never gayer than during this period. The people of Washington felt the loss distinctly when President Arthur and Mrs. McElroy left the Executive Mansion.
