James A. Garfield was another of the Civil War generals to be advanced to a place of political preeminence: after the war he entered the United States Congress.  It was during this period that Lucretia acquired some familiarity with Washington social life.  Mrs. Garfield presided with dignity and grace at all official functions but fate cut short her career in the White House.  On July 2, 1881 only four months after his inauguration, James Garfield was struck down by an assassin's bullet as he was entering the railroad station in Washington; for three months he lingered, Lucretia always at his side.
