First Lady Bess Truman

First Lady Bess Truman

Bess Wallace Truman came to the White House with her husband Harry. She was thoroughly schooled in Washington protocol since her husband had served two terms in the United States Senate and as Vice President. Attendees at official functions were impressed with her graciousness and charm. A major renovation of the White House took place during Truman’s term and Blair House, across the street, became home to the First Family; the Trumans moved back to the White House in the spring of 1952.
